The importance of cloud computing and company culture

As best business practices evolve alongside growing technologies, greater importance is being placed on company culture and the necessary tech to sustain it. Company culture is hugely significant nowadays, as companies with engaged employees are reported to outperform those without by up to 202% (source, Stackhands).

But what exactly is company culture, and how can cloud technology be used to make it better?

Productivity, growth and retention. It’s a culture thing.

There are many misconceptions about company culture, with the focus wrongly placed on how the work environment looks and ‘feels’. But company culture is as much about the mechanics of a business from an employer/employee perspective, with the purpose of improving productivity, growth and staff retention.

In other words, it’s about investing in people for the long term, cultivating their skills and nurturing them for the good of the individual as well as the success of the company.

How cloud computing is helping to implement company culture

Sometimes referred to as ‘The Millennials’, Generation Y (below the age of 35 in 2015) represents a significant percentage of today’s workforce in the UK, and is set to comprise 75% of the global workforce by 2025 (source, Deloitte UK). This is a generation raised in a time of huge technological advances and financial stability, and thereby has a very different set of values compared to those who came before.

According to a study by PwC, personal development and flexibility are the biggest priorities for this generation, which means employers are having to adapt their company culture in order to attract young talent and ensure direction, growth and sustainability.

The use of cloud computing plays a huge part in implementing this new culture, enabling off-premise access to business systems and allowing employers to give staff the flexibility to work outside of conventional hours.

More than that though, it’s about catering for a generation who are acclimated to and very adept at using technology in this way. Whilst remote access and data-sharing functionality are considered relatively new concepts to many employers, these are all commonplace for the Gen Y population, and a workplace without this setup would seem antiquated by comparison. In fact, a staggering 81% of surveyed Gen Y’s say they prefer to work with technology in order to help them accomplish their goals (source, Millennial Branding).

Encouraging personal development through integrated ERP

If you haven’t already implemented integrated Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, then it’s a good place to start when looking at ways to strengthen the culture within your company – specifically when encouraging the personal development of your workforce.

By linking HR with other key areas of your business, the progress of individual staff members can be measured across different aspects of performance and then used to implement changes to help individuals accomplish their goals.

With so much emphasis placed on personal development nowadays, it’s important to put the right system in place to help manage and accurately grow your workforce in ways that will not only benefit the individual but the long term objectives of your business also.
