Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software not only makes it much easier to manage key business processes but it also allows for better decision-making by giving you a clear view of your business KPIs. However, if you’re using outdated ERP software then this can start to cause you real problems.

There are many reasons why businesses may find themselves using outdated ERP software. One common reason is that the system being used has been heavily customised and therefore upgrading seems too costly and time-consuming. Another reason might be that the software has been outdated for so long that it’s no longer possible to upgrade to the latest version.

What is the problem?

Whatever the reason for using outdated ERP software, it can cause a considerable amount of disruption to your business. Firstly, if your system is outdated, there’s a good chance that it doesn’t have the level of functionality that you now require. This means that workarounds have to be created in order for the software to function satisfactorily.

Older ERP software is typically less user-friendly too, as it was likely to be built years ago, before advances in technology which we now view as commonplace were made, such as responsive design principles allowing people to easily achieve what they need to do using any device, or integration with modern third-party apps. This means your IT department has to spend time training staff to use an archaic system and issuing fixes and workarounds, rather than focusing on more important tasks to help grow your business.

In addition, some ERP providers – such as SAP and Sage – have many different versions of their software and each one is treated separately. When this is the case, vendors can choose to end their support for different versions, therefore forcing people to move to more costly additions or a different solution altogether. This is what happened with Sage 100 earlier in the year, with the company announcing that it will no longer provide security patches or new functionality therefore potentially putting thousands of businesses at serious risk from a security point of view.
